This isn’t the only off-the-wall bar the city has to offer, either. There are tons of unique things to do in Fort Lauderdale, from sea turtle walks at night in the summer with the Museum of Discovery & Science to see loggerheads laying eggs to a Cruisin’ Tikis’ floating tiki bar on the New River. Originally a speakeasy from the 1920s, the beach shanty (which has drawn everyone from the Rockefellers to George Harrison) is only reachable by boat shuttle, and the menu varies depending on the catch of the day. Up in Pompano Beach, head to Hillsboro Inlet Park for views of the historic lighthouse followed by dinner at Cap’s Place, the state’s oldest restaurant. Charter an authentic gondola to experience the "Venice of America." Take the Water Taxi or the Jungle Queen to tour around the mansion-lined waterways of Fort Lauderdale. If you’re in town around the full moon, there’s even a kayak tour complete with glow sticks helping light up the way. Rent your board at Park & Ocean, the concession area, where you can take a seat for lunch and craft brews once you’ve worked up an appetite. In Fort Lauderdale, Hugh Taylor Birch State Park is known for paddleboarding-particularly through coastal dunes. For the more adventure-driven, kayak or canoe along one of the dozen trails running through the national park. I mean, there’s nothing more special than watching the sunrise over the ocean, which you can experience right from your bed.The Florida Everglades and its sawgrass-filled swampland comprise two-thirds of Greater Fort Lauderdale, and the best way to see a sliver of its 1.5 million acres and resident alligators is by airboat. Literally, as soon as you enter you’ll notice the whitewashed wood, decking, gorgeous beach and amazing beach views that each room has. One of the best things to do in Fort Lauderdale and about the Pelican Grand is its charming seaside vibe. Just make sure to book a table in advance, especially if you’re visiting at the weekend. You can choose if you want to tour on an airboat in the day or night (both with possible sightings of alligators). Once here, pop over to Sawgrass Recreation Park and head out onto the Everglades with Gator Tim. Here, you’ll find a whopping sixty acres of botanical gardens and the wildlife sanctuary that looks after permanently injured or un-releasable birds that would otherwise perish. 9.) Explore Flamingo GardensĪfter relaxing all morning on Fort Lauderdale’s beaches, pop over to the botanical gardens and wildlife sanctuary of Flamingo Gardens. The water taxi runs across some pre-defined routes through the centre of Fort Lauderdale, the gorgeous River Routes and the excitingly named, Margaritaville Express Route (which runs every hour). Running approximately every 30 minutes or so, the water taxi in Fort Lauderdale is a great way to get onto the riverways and explore the city from a totally different perspective. Just remember to pack that sunblock – it’s no coincidence that Florida is known as the Sunshine State.
